LANTITE is a mandatory hurdle for entry into initial teacher education programs across Australia. For candidates with a disability, medical condition, or other qualifying circumstance, reasonable adjustments are available to ensure the test accurately reflects your skills rather than the impact of your condition.
This page explains who qualifies, what adjustments are available, how to apply, and what to keep in mind.
Who Can Apply for Reasonable Adjustments?
Reasonable adjustments are available to candidates whose ability to demonstrate their skills may be affected by a condition or circumstance. Qualifying categories include:
- Physical disability (including mobility, vision, or hearing impairment)
- Mental health condition (such as anxiety disorder, depression, or PTSD)
- Chronic health condition (such as diabetes, epilepsy, or chronic fatigue)
- Neurodiversity (including ADHD, autism spectrum disorder, dyslexia, or dyscalculia)
- Temporary injury or illness that affects test performance
Reasonable adjustments are not an exemption from LANTITE. You are still required to sit both the Literacy and Numeracy tests and meet the same pass standard (the 70th percentile of the Australian adult population). Adjustments change how you sit the test, not what the test requires of you.
What Adjustments Are Available?
The adjustments granted depend on your individual circumstances and supporting documentation. Common adjustments include:
| Adjustment Type | Description |
|---|---|
| Extra time | Additional time beyond the standard 120 minutes per test |
| Rest breaks | Scheduled breaks that do not count toward test time |
| Separate room | Sitting the test in a quieter, individual space |
| Screen magnification or zoom | Enlarged text or interface for vision impairment |
| Assistive technology | Use of approved software or hardware aids |
| Reader or scribe | A person who reads questions aloud or records your answers |
The specific adjustment granted is determined by ACER based on your application and documentation. Not all adjustments are available in all test centres. Contact ACER directly if you have a specific requirement not listed above.
How to Apply: Step by Step
- Create your candidate account at the ACER registration portal before registering for a test window.
- Select reasonable adjustments during the registration process. The application is part of the registration form, not a separate process.
- Upload supporting documentation from a qualified professional (such as a registered psychologist, GP, or specialist). Documentation must clearly describe your condition, how it affects your ability to sit a timed computer-based test, and the adjustments recommended.
- Submit your application before the registration deadline for your chosen test window.
- Wait for ACER's decision. ACER will review your application and notify you of the outcome. Allow enough time before your intended test date for this review to occur.
Important: Adjustments Do Not Carry Over
A critical point that many candidates overlook: reasonable adjustment approvals do not carry over between test windows. If you sit LANTITE more than once, you must reapply for adjustments each time you register. Keep copies of your supporting documentation so you can resubmit without delay.
Tips for a Successful Application
- Apply early. Last-minute applications may not be processed before your test date.
- Ensure your documentation is recent and from a qualified professional. ACER may request additional information if documentation is unclear or outdated.
- Be specific in your documentation. A report that describes how your condition affects timed, screen-based testing is more useful than a general diagnosis letter.
- If you are unsure whether your condition qualifies, contact ACER directly before registering. Their candidate support team can advise you without requiring you to commit to a test window.
